Kept in Cloth: coverlets and quilts from the Hollin attic

Eleven coverlets and quilts that stayed in the house for a century, shown flat and in raking light so the weave and the repairs can be seen. Every piece has a label that says what it is made of, where it was mended, and what we do not know about who made it. A ground-floor set of the labels and a photograph book are at the desk for anyone who does not take the stair.

The Merchant's Ledger, 1884 to 1911

Twenty-seven years of one family's accounts, read page by page: what a barrel of flour cost in 1886, what the ice trade paid, who was owed money and for how long. The ledgers are shown under glass, with a copy you can turn.

A Working Garden: tools, seed lists and the kitchen garden

The walled garden fed the house before it was ever a pleasure garden. Seed order books from 1902 to 1910, the tools that were kept, and what was actually grown in each bed, planted again this year in the same places.

The River at the Door: freight, ice and the ferry

How the Hollins made a living from the river: freight manifests, the ice-house accounts, and the ferry that ran from the foot of Water Street until 1911. Objects from the family's own papers, with the day book open to a winter week.

The parlour

Every event is included in admission. Places are counted because the rooms are small and the garden paths are narrow; when an event is full it stays listed and offers the waiting list. Past events leave this page by themselves.

Family afternoon: printing with woodblocks

Children from six with an adult: print a coverlet pattern with woodblocks cut from the museum's designs, and take the print home. Aprons provided; ink washes out.
